Abstract
Face Match is Motive’s automated driver identification feature that uses facial recognition to match drivers to vehicles. This helps fleets reduce unassigned trips, automate log suggestions, and improve operational efficiency, safety, and compliance.
Overview
Face Match automates driver identification using facial recognition through a dual-facing AI Dashcam. This feature links trip data to the correct driver, reducing administrative work, improving safety coaching, and ensuring accurate hours of service (HOS) records.
- Save time: Minimize manual driver assignments, freeing fleet managers to focus on higher-priority tasks.
- Enhance safety: Ensure coaching events and Safety Scores are linked to the correct driver for fair feedback.
- Improve accountability: Strengthen incident investigations and vehicle use management with accurate driver identification.
- Support compliance: Automate driver log suggestions to decrease unassigned trips and improve HOS accuracy.
How to enable Face Match
Users with admin permissions can enable Face Match in the driver identification settings of the Motive Dashboard. Before enabling the feature, confirm that all vehicles meet the required eligibility criteria.
Eligibility requirements:
- A dual-facing AI Dashcam (model DC-54) must be installed and assigned to the vehicle.
- Driver privacy mode must be turned off for the driver-facing camera.
- The vehicle cannot have a static pairing assignment.
- A Vehicle Gateway must be properly assigned to the vehicle.
To enable Face Match:
- Log in to the Motive Dashboard and click the Admin icon in the bottom-left menu.
- In the menu on the left side, select Fleet View.
- In the Driver Identification settings, check the Face Match option.
- A consent form will appear. Read and confirm that you will obtain all required consents from drivers or vehicle operators.
- Click Confirm to enable the feature.
Note: Due to biometric privacy laws, Face Match is not available for vehicles operating in Illinois. You are responsible for obtaining any required consents before enabling this feature. |
How Face Match works
Face Match uses images captured by the AI Dashcam to identify drivers automatically. The system is designed to capture one high-quality image per trip and match it to a driver profile.
How it works:
- The AI Dashcam captures a driver image when the vehicle exceeds 5 MPH and more than six minutes have passed since the last stop.
- Images are securely processed using a third-party provider (AWS Rekognition) to match or create a facial profile. Motive does not store biometric data.
- If the image matches an existing profile, the trip can be automatically assigned to that driver.
- If the system detects a new, unrecognized face, it creates an unfamiliar profile.
- A fleet manager must manually review and assign the unfamiliar profile to a driver from the Admin > Drivers > Face Match tab.
- After this one-time association, future trips by that driver will be automatically assigned.
AI identified vs. AI assigned:
When reviewing trips in the Motive Dashboard, you may see the following labels:
- AI identified: The system suggests a driver but has not yet assigned the trip. A fleet user must review and assign it.
-
AI assigned: The system has confidently matched and automatically assigned the trip.
- For ELD drivers, the assignment appears as a suggested log edit in the Driver App, which the driver must approve.
- For non-ELD drivers, the assignment is applied automatically.
Understanding legal and privacy considerations
Facial recognition technology is subject to legal and privacy requirements. Before enabling Face Match, make sure your fleet is compliant with all applicable laws.
- State-specific regulations: Face Match is not available in Illinois due to biometric privacy laws.
- Consent requirements: Your company is responsible for obtaining consent from drivers, contractors, or anyone who may be recorded. Motive provides a sample consent form to support this process.
- Data security and storage: The facial recognition process is handled by a third-party provider (AWS Rekognition). Motive does not store or access biometric data. This design, combined with Motive’s security measures, significantly reduces the risk of biometric data exposure.
FAQs
What is Face Match?
Face Match is an AI-powered feature that uses a camera to automatically identify drivers and assign trips. It helps reduce administrative work and improves accountability.
What do I need to use Face Match?
To use Face Match, the vehicle must:
- Have a Motive AI Dashcam installed (model DC-54)
- Have driver privacy mode turned off
- Not be assigned using static pairing
Why is Face Match not available in Illinois?
Due to state-specific biometric privacy laws, Motive does not support Face Match for vehicles operating in Illinois.
What is an unfamiliar profile?
An unfamiliar profile is created when Face Match detects a new driver who hasn’t been linked to a driver account. To match the profile:
- In the Motive Fleet Dashboard, click the Admin icon in the left-hand menu.
- Go to Drivers and select the Face Match tab.
- Find the unfamiliar profile in the list.
