Geofences

Geofences are virtual boundaries you can create in the Motive Dashboard to define areas like yards, customer sites, or restricted zones. These digital perimeters help automate alerts and generate location-based insights, supporting more efficient fleet operations and stronger security for your vehicles and assets.

Overview

By creating custom zones in the Motive Dashboard, you can track when vehicles or assets enter or leave key locations, reducing manual oversight and improving visibility.

  • Automate real-time location-based alerts: Receive notifications when vehicles or assets move in or out of geofenced zones to support theft prevention and route tracking.
  • Improve operational efficiency: Validate yard moves, monitor site visits, and automate location-based workflows to save time and reduce errors.
  • Enhance asset and vehicle tracking: Quickly locate equipment and monitor usage across job sites.
  • Streamline reporting: Generate reports to review activity within geofenced areas, including dwell time and vehicle utilization, for data-driven decision-making.
  • Area monitoring: Define operational territories, such as terminals or yards, and enforce rules like requiring a driver to be within a specific zone to select the Yard Move duty status.
  • Proximity tracking: Easily create geofences around new locations using the location search on the Fleet View, making it simple to monitor customer sites, service areas, or restricted zones.

Basics

Fleet admins and authorized fleet managers can create and manage geofences directly in the Motive Dashboard.

Geofences are managed in the Admin section. Once created, you can:

  • Edit: Change the name, shape, size, or assigned category at any time to reflect operational needs.
  • Deactivate: Temporarily disable a geofence to stop alerts and reporting for that area.
  • Reactivate: Restore a previously deactivated geofence if the location becomes relevant again.
  • Bulk upload: Create multiple geofences at once by uploading a CSV file, ideal for managing many locations.

Searching geofences

  1. From Fleet View: Use the search bar on the map to locate geofences by name.
  2. From the Admin page:
  • Go to Admin > Organization > Geofences to view a full list.
  • You can search by name or filter by status (active or deactivated).

Viewing geofence details

  1. From Fleet View: Click on a geofence to view its boundaries and basic details.
  2. Use the Geofence Summary and Geofence Inventory reports to access data on vehicle and asset visits, dwell times, and current inventory within each geofenced location.

Reports and alerts

Motive offers a variety of reports and alerts to help you leverage your geofence data effectively:

Reports

  • Geofence Summary Report: Provides an overview of vehicle and asset activity within your geofences, including visit counts and total time spent inside.
  • Geofence Inventory Report: Shows a real-time snapshot of which vehicles and assets are currently inside a specific geofence, helping you assess on-site inventory.

Alerts

  • Speeding violations: Set up custom alerts to be notified when a vehicle exceeds a specific speed limit inside a geofenced area, such as a yard or low-speed zone.
  • Entry/exit alerts: Receive real-time notifications when a vehicle or asset enters or exits a geofence. Alerts can be customized and sent to multiple recipients via email or push notification.
